As Christians themselves still have a hard time agreeing on what exactly defines an evangelical, Ellison Research asked the average adult American what they believe is an "evangelical Christian." Thirty-six percent of them said they had no idea. "I'm not sure; all I can think of is Billy Graham," said one 40 year-old woman from Florida who does not attend worship services, in the survey. "I am not sure, and I am a Christian," said a 55-year-old man from Indiana. Although Americans who would call themselves evangelical were much more likely to have an actual definition for the word than others, the survey, released Wednesday, found that 14 percent of those self-described evangelicals couldn't guess what an evangelical is

But most Israelis and Americans, including the influential U.S. Jewish community, are in the dark about the Jerusalem negotiations, allowing the Israeli government to continue the virtual chopping up of Israel's capital city without any major protest or distraction. Olmert's plan seems to be to wait until the last minute, until just before signing a binding document that will be guaranteed by a letter from the U.S. president, to announce Jerusalem is being negotiated.

Assad's comments came after meetings with France's leader and regional mediators in talks focusing on Mideast peace and Iran's nuclear program. France hopes that warmer relations with Syria, Iran's ally, could help the West in its efforts to persuade Iran to curb its nuclear program.

Therefore they are preparing, at least mentally, to complete against the leading candidate, according to the polls, in the ruling party’s primaries. Senior Likud officials estimate that the Kadima battle has in fact been decided already, and Livni will be the one to replace Prime Minister Ehud Olmert. With the primaries two weeks away, one should not belittle the estimate of senior Likud figures. However, suddenly nobody in the political establishment knows when the next elections will be held. Very senior Kadima and Likud sources are convinced that Tzipi Livni’s position recently shifted. If up until now, the foreign minister’s advisors conveyed a sense of going to elections after the primaries, the feeling is that something has changed in recent days.

"This is a clear message by Iran that it is preparing for war," a Kuwaiti defense official said. Iran has repeatedly threatened to close the Strait of Hormuz. Teheran has also warned that it would target Gulf Cooperation Council states in any retaliation for a U.S. attack.

The grant from the Evelyn and Walter Haas, Jr. Fund was given to the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force Foundation's Institute for Welcoming Resources and five partner organizations for a joint collaboration on strengthening the capacity and voice of Christian organizations that support gays and lesbians. For Kermit Rainman, social research analyst for Focus on the Family, the move violates Scripture. "Gay activists and their allies have made no secret of their strategy to convince Bible-believing Christians and Jews that homosexual behavior is no longer sinful in God’s eyes," said Rainman, according to Citizenlink, a publication of Focus on the Family.

She also got $50 worth of free gas, thanks to winning a raffle. For the local farmer, it was a nice side benefit, at a time when gas was more than $4 a gallon. Churches nationwide are making similar offers, ranging from gas card raffles to 99-cent gas sales at local stations, to boost attendance during the vacation season and attract new members. But some Christians question whether a financial incentive should be used to draw people into church. Robert Kruschwitz, director of The Center for Christian Ethics at Baylor University, called the promotions "unseemly" and "misguided." Umsted, a church official, said a couple of Valley City congregants stopped attending because they considered it "a bribe." But the Rev. Carl Borden, pastor of the congregation, said the overriding goal is to have a little fun and remind people that the church is there.

Mirzayev underlined that approximately 50 countries have already approved their participation in the three-day conference.

The “Berlin Declaration,” as the 1,200-word document is called, comes one week after the conclusion of the Aug. 18-22 meeting on how the Christian community might express genuine love for the Jewish people, especially in Europe. The European setting of the statement is particularly significant. The declaration places emphasis on four main points – the need for repentance, the problem of sin, the solution for sin, and the call for action.“We deeply regret the all too frequent persecution of Jewish people in Jesus’ name,” the declaration begins. “During the genocide of the Holocaust, when the Jewish people were in their greatest peril, most Christian believers were silent,” it continues. “Many more today feel embarrassment and shame for the general failure to protest. As a result, there is an evident insecurity about relations with Jewish people. Also, there is a tendency to replace direct gospel outreach with Jewish-Christian dialogue,” the declaration adds. But more than a Christian problem, it is a problem of sin, which “affects all humanity, both the persecutor and the sufferer.” And the solution, the task force noted, is found in recognizing the uniqueness of Christ as the crucified, resurrected and divine Messiah who alone can save from death and bring eternal life.

"There may be a slight dip, but we're going to see sustained high food prices for the foreseeable future," Katherine Sierra, the Bank's Vice President for Sustainable Development told Reuters in an interview. "What we're seeing right now is a kind of quiet famine, people that have really had to reduce their food consumption quite considerably, a 100 million people moving back into poverty in Africa," Sierra said on the sidelines of an agriculture and climate change conference in Australia. Many nations are braced for further instability after food riots in 37 countries and international rice prices soaring from around $400 to $1,000 a tonne.

Researchers asked adults which, if any, of eight behaviors with moral overtones they had engaged in during the past week. The behaviors included exposure to pornography, using profanity in public, gambling, gossiping, engaging in sexual intercourse with someone to whom they were not married, retaliating against someone, getting drunk, and lying. A majority of adults had engaged in at least one of those eight behaviors during the past week.
